Critical Reflection

3.2.1 Module Learning

In week 1, I have set goals to improve my verbal communication and critical thinking skills, particularly in responding to impromptu discussions and articulating arguments in written and verbal form. Coming from a design background, I relied heavily on visual communication. However, I acknowledge the importance of strengthening my verbal articulation. Through this module, I have made progress in these areas, though there is still room for improvement.

One key takeaway from this module was learning how to structure arguments more effectively. Previously, I struggled with articulating thoughts on the spot. However, through the class activities and lessons conducted by Prof Blackstone, I learnt to view things with a critical thinking approach. I learnt how to anticipate potential counterarguments and weaknesses in solutions. Consequently, it helps me develop a more analytical mindset when evaluating, ensuring I am seeing things from all sides and not biased.

Another aspect I worked on was improving my ability to process verbal information quickly. Initially, I found it challenging to respond immediately, but through active listening exercises and practice, I learned to focus on key points and formulate responses more efficiently. While I still prefer visual support, I have gained strategies to engage in verbal discussions more effectively. Additionally, such discussions allowed me to practice responding to different viewpoints, which helps me keep an open mind and become a little more confident to speak my thoughts.

To further improve, I plan to continue engaging myself in discussions and try to voice out my opinion in class discussions more openly. Additionally, I aim to refine my writing skills by critically analysing arguments, which will be beneficial in both academic and professional settings. Overall, this module has been useful in enhancing my critical thinking and communication skills, making me a more well-rounded communicator.

3.2.2 Project Learning

Throughout my research on AI and IoT-based smart traffic management in Singapore, I gained valuable insights into both the technical and communication aspects of presenting complex topics. One of the most significant skills I developed was confidence and clarity while presenting. I delivered a strong presentation, effectively conveying the overview and need for the traffic management system in Singapore to be further enhanced. Preparing for this required me to simplify technical concepts for a general audience while maintaining depth and accuracy. In addition, as someone who values visual communication, I took the time and effort to create the deck of presentation slides along with my team members, which can best deliver our message.

Additionally, this project enhanced my teamwork and critical thinking skills. Not only did I learn to integrate various perspectives when collaborating with my team, but also to make it sound like one voice. I realised the importance of effective communication among the team by providing feedback and motivating one another. This collaborative experience has also taught me that teamwork is not just about sharing the workload but also about leveraging each other's expertise to create a stronger and more well-rounded project.

Beyond technical knowledge, this experience reshaped my perspective on learning. I realised that research is not just about gathering information but also about interpreting and presenting it engagingly. The process helped me become more adaptable, which is an invaluable skill for my future studies and career. Moving forward, I aim to further improve my ability to break down complex ideas and communicate them persuasively, ensuring that technological innovations can be understood and appreciated by diverse audiences.
